For the benefit of jewellery buyers and to make the jewellery purchase credible without fake laser hallmarks, the Government Of India has made it mandatory to have a 6 Digit HUID number on all gold jewellery and artefacts from 1st April, 2023.
What is HUID Number on Gold Jewellery?
HUID number is a Six-digit alphanumeric code that gives a unique number to every gold jewellery item at the time of Hallmarking. The jewellery item is stamped with the HUID number manually at the Assaying & Hallmarking centre.
The Department of Consumer Affairs stated, “HUID based Hallmarking, registration of jewellers is automatic with no human interference. It is aimed at ensuring the purity of Hallmarked jewellery and check any malpractice. HUID is a secure system and poses no risk to data privacy or security.
What are the Hallmarking/HUID symbols to look for on gold jewellery?
BIS Hallmark will now consist of 3 symbols –
- BIS LOGO
- Purity & Fineness of Gold
- 6 Digit HUID number (Hallmark Unique Identification Number).
Before buying gold jewellery, one should look for all the above three symbols.
Earlier the gold jewellery was either having a BIS Logo/Hallmark Symbol with a Four Digit or 6 Digit HUID number but w.e.f 1st April, 2023 all gold jewellery will have a mandatory 6 Digit HUID number.

The best way to read the laser inscription is to take a picture of the Hallmark symbol, zoom in or ask the jeweller to show the number through a magnifying lens or eye glass.
Why HUID was introduced by the government?
To make the consumers jewellery purchase more credible and traceable, the Government of India is making it mandatory to have HUID Hallmarking on every gold jewellery product.
To verify the HUID number, you can download the BIS CARE app (anyone can access it), go to Verify HUID, put in the HUID number and the complete details of that particular jewellery product will be available.
